The Lion Maritime Development Charitable Trust was established to preserve New Zealand’s unique maritime history by ensuring significant vessels remain in working order to provide individuals and community groups the opportunity to utilise these environments for the benefit of the community as a whole.
The late Sir Peter Blake’s 78 foot Whitbread ocean race yacht, Lion New Zealand, provides an amazing environment where participants are motivated to reach their full potential and develop self - confidence. This boat cannot operate on its own and therefore provides the perfect atmosphere for team building exercises and personal development. The mere act of sailing the vessel and operating her efficiently promotes self - reliance and interdependence.
Each participant will be involved in helming the yacht, passage planning and safe navigation of the vessel. Hoisting, setting and dowsing of the vessel's sails, food preparation and cooking for the team along with other housekeeping as required. In this environment the participants will become familiar with challenge, adversity, perseverance and risk management, all of which are difficult to provide within the limitations of daily life.
Adventurous training aboard Lion New Zealand will increase self-confidence giving those participating responsibilities and promote decision making. The aim of adventurous training on board Lion New Zealand is to provide these opportunities through participation in a challenging pursuit or expedition, the Lion New Zealand Trust youth programme is invaluable in the development and training of future leaders.
